Detailed watercolour paintings capturing the atmosphere of a scene using bold colours and strong tonal values. Giclée prints and cards.
I attended St Martins School of Art for my foundation course followed by a degree course in Graphic Design at Kingston Polytechnic. The following ten years were spent in the Advertising Industry in London.
Having moved to Kent in 1986, I began concentrating on watercolour painting, selling my work from the early 1990’s.
Realism in my paintings is achieved through the use of photographs as reference, not copying every detail but designing the picture from a number of different images.
I aim to capture light and depth, particularly moments when shadows are at their longest revealing the form of the landscape. I paint using bold colours and with strong tonal values, building up the watercolour paint, starting with washes and finishing with a dry brush or natural sponge to create more random marks.
My paintings are inspired by the Kent and Sussex countryside and holidays spent mostly in Europe.
In addition to landscape painting, I enjoy the challenge of portrait painting in the knowledge that a good portrait will be treasured within a family.
I regularly exhibit in Kent and East Sussex and have had paintings accepted by the RWS 21st Century Watercolour exhibition at the Bankside Gallery and sold work with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Galleries, in London and the Society of Women Artists.
Many of my paintings are available as quality limited-edition giclée prints.
Open Studios is a very rewarding experience giving me the opportunity to talk and demonstrate watercolours to people who are genuinely interested in art. I also thoroughly enjoy visiting other Open Studios.
