Still life photography as well as prints on gesso panels and abstract silkscreen prints. Recent work includes backlit panels. Exhibits in London and South East.
My artistic career began as a printmaker for the distinguished artist Michael Rothenstein RA in the early 70’s, and I went on to teach in the Fine art departments of Goldsmith University and Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London. Over the years I have also collaborated with other artists including Edward Bawden, Bernard Cheese, Valerie Daniels, Gertrude Hermes, Trevor Allen, Eduardo Pallozzi, Ralph Steadman, Jeremy Deller, as well as Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge with Artist’s books.
In time my own work in abstract print and still life and landscape photography has emerged from the observation of the quality and character of light and light phenomena, translated into the medium of printed colour.
In my printmaking I mix my own powered pigments in medium and print them on various substrates ranging from paper to specially prepared gesso on canvas panels. The silkscreen artwork is abstract in nature, and focuses on the exploration of colour. My work is influenced by artists like Josef Albers and Mark Rothko It has been described as meditative, serene, calming and still.
In my photographic work I create still life compositions in the style of the old masters, enhancing the artwork using modern technology. The viewer is faced with familiar objects, yet the compositions hold visual surprises. The play with illusionary elements like unconventional lighting, forced perspective and juxtaposed objects characterises the work. This results in everyday objects taking on an intriguing and surreal ambience.
Giclée refers to the process in which the ink is laid down on the paper, and is given to an inkjet printed limited edition of an artwork or photograph. The artwork created in this way is an original in it's own right. The image is printed on archival quality artist's coated paper with pigment inks that are UV stable to ensure longevity. The lightfastness of the finished print is permanent. Recently Shelley has been extending the range of substrates he uses in his printing, and some exciting new developments will be on show during Open Studios.
My work is available in a wide variety of stained or gilded frames made by myself, or as unframed prints.
I exhibit my work in London, participate in art fairs in the South-East and have had work hung in several of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. In 2005 I did win the John Purcell Paper Award for Outstanding Printmaking and the Aberystwyth Purchase Prize in 2009. My work is held in public and private collections in the UK, Germany and the USA.
