Vikky P. Furse Dip AD

work by Vikky P. Furse

Anders takes a break (NE Greenland), Acrylic, 51x76cm

Vikky has new paintings from field sketches as Artist in Residence in Antarctic 2007, and latest expedition to NE Greenland. Also portraits and other work.

Vikky was selected as an Artist in Residence in Antarctica, and spent 2 months drawing and painting there, returning early in 2007.
If you are passionate about the Polar Regions you might think all Vikky’s buses arrived at once!

“The Antarctic Residency was a fabulous experience. We made many landings by rubber Zodiac, and I filled my journals with sketches of penguins, elephant seals, birds, landscapes, and anything else I saw. I also made paintings from the mother ship as we glided past massive icebergs, mountains and islands caped in snow and ice.”

“Not being too hopeful of winning the Antarctic opportunity, I had arranged to go to Greenland again. This time I took part in my most ambitious expedition with Inuit hunters whom I know, and their dog teams. Their plan was to travel far north of their usual winter hunting grounds, which are being adversely affected by thinning sea-ice due to global warming. The weather was in fact terrible with tent blow-outs and much else besides. I suffered some cold damage, but I still filled my sketchbooks!”

“I also had exhibitions, demonstrations, & workshops pre-arranged from the year before, so it turned into a very hectic 2007.”

Back home with sketchbooks and journals full, and her Smarden studio coming to life, Vikky was invited to write an article for the Pastel Society Newsletter.
Later in 2007 she was a finalist in the Artists & Illustrators ‘Self Portrait’ competition. A&I then commissioned her to write a 4-page illustrated article on being an artist in Polar Regions, which was published in the January 2008 edition.

Two of her Greenland pictures were selected for the Pastel Society exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London 2008. Following a weeks Residency at Nature in Art Gallery, near Gloucester this January, Vikky has a joint exhibition with Chris Furse at the Scott Polar Institute, Cambridge September 20 – November 23, 2008.

Vikky is an art school graduate. As well as exhibiting her work in London and elsewhere, she regularly takes portrait commissions. She is a member of London’s Hesketh Hubbard Art Society, and a founding member of the Ashford Visual Artists (AVA). From 2001 to 2005 she was on the committee of South East Open Studios.
