South East Open Studios 4-20 June

The Village Directory May 2010 (Aldington area)

This year there are over 300 artists and craftspeople opening their studios to the public as part of South East Open Studios (4-20 June). In the run up to this annual event I will be interviewing a number of artists about their work.

Returning to South East Open Studios after a couple of years is artist Carolyn Cloke. Most of her work is botanical which is executed in coloured pencil, ink or graphite. When I recently visited her studio I was immediately drawn to her study of a pineapple and the accuracy with the fi ne detail in her botanical images. This was the fi rst time I have been to Carolyn’s studio where she showed me her new portraits and pen and wash pictures of Italy.

I was fascinated to see her work books and in particular view her one on the wedding stationery that she designed for her daughter.  It was intriguing to see the development of the designs and then the fi nished designs.  Carolyn’s attention to detail is outstanding.  For this years’ open studio Carolyn will be demonstrating her work as well as having coloured pencils out for mini workshops and taster sessions.

Further details of Carolyns studio address and opening hours can be found at: www.seos-art.org or in the guide which will be available from mid-May.
