Artists open their studios to the public

KM Extra

Artists from across the district are opening their studios to the public this month.

Sandwich calligrapher Julia Baxter and paper maker Sue Hibberd from Deal have been co-ordinating the event as local organisers for South East Open Studios.

Julia said: “Last June, Sue and I organised our own open studios event in the area called Art and Soul, which was very successful.

“This year we are pleased to be part of this larger, county-wide event.

“People should look out for posters in the towns and bright yellow balloons showing where the venues are.

Sue said: “People always like to see where artists work and this is an ideal opportunity to see the studios and perhaps pick up a bargain.

“A lot of artists have reduced prices on their work because there is no gallery commission to pay.

Julias home, Nursery House in Deal Road, Sandwich will not only feature her work and Sues but will include art by her husband Bob Martin, ceramic sculptor Colin McGowan and a sculpture exhibition in the garden.

The event runs until June 26 and brochures giving details of all the artists and venues are available from tourist offices and libraries.

Information is also available on the www.southeastopenstudios.org.uk.
