Born and raised in rural Japan, ceramic artist Kazumi Harnett specialises in creating individual thrown vessels, and will be exhibiting with South East Open Studios this month.
Kazumi’s rural upbringing has played a significant part in the development of her art, and she says: “From childhood I was aware that soil played a significant role for my family in making a living from nature. For me, working with clay is almost like going back to the way I was brought up in Japan”.
The work is thrown which requires immediate response to the material, and the forms are then manipulated to capture the movement, softness and fluidity of wet clay, leaving marks and textures from the process on the surface.
