Doors wide open for art opportunity

Kent on Sunday

ARTISTS across the county are throwing open the doors to their studios and allowing the public a peek inside, writes Phil Reilly.

Hundreds of professional and amateur artists working in a number of media are taking part in South East Open Studios throughout June.
The annual event is in its 12th year, but this time there are more artists taking part than ever before.
Liz Garnett,a photographer from Brabourne Leas, said the events allowed people to see a wider variety of art in a much less formal environment than a gallery.

Better than gallery
She told KOS Media: “It allows artists to show off a much greater amount of work than they might be able to in a gallery. They can show work from maybe 10 years ago as well as current work and works in progress.  “For people who want to start investing in art it is an opportunity to build a rapport with an artist or a group of artists. They will be able to get to know the artists and how they work.  “Each one will be different and you can see a whole range of different art forms.”
Mrs Garnett said she would be opening up her dining room as well as her studio to give people a comfortable way to view her work.  She added: “I will have some work on the walls and also lots stacked up,and I will also be selling cards and merchandise.
“It’s a much more relaxing way to discover art. People can find galleries a bit scary, here you don’t have to stand on ceremony, you can ask any number of questions and no question is too silly.”

South East Open Studios runs from June 6 - 22. Details of where and when individual artists are opening up their studios can be found at www.seos-art.org.
