Artists draw in the crowds with Open Studios

The annual South East Open Studios (SEOS) fortnight runs until Friday and boasts 265 artists from Surrey, Kent and East Sussex.

Artists based in Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Eridge Park, Heathfield, Rotherfield and Wadhurst have all become involved in the project.

Marina Elphick of Mark Cross, who produces batiks using hot wax and dyes, is in her third year of the SEOS.

"Being a self-employed artist obviously I have to look out for a place to show my work. It is quite different from actually going to a gallery as you see works in progress as well as the finished articles.

"It is quite interesting to be able to show them what we do, show them your technique and talk to them about your work.

"I get students come round who are looking to improve their portfolio and it is nice to pass anything on as it doesn't seem so long ago that I was there."

The open studios began in 1996 and the numbers of artists participating has grown steadily since then.

The artists include both professional and amateur workers and the open studios are free to all.

SEOS spokeswoman Liz Garnett was keen to stress the benefits of the event for both members of the public and the artists.

"I think it probably started as a means to sell pieces of work, but it has become much more.

"By meeting the public an artist can talk to them an get ideas and you are able to talk to them about your work and give them an experience and understanding of your art," she added.

Guide books listing the various artists contact details and opening hours can be found in tourist offices, from local councils, libraries and online at www.seos-art.org
