All generations enjoyed the benefits of meeting the artists at Mulberry House in Benenden during the Open Studios event held in June this year.

Practical demonstrations in silversmithing by Louisa Crispin, wood engraving by Sue Scullard and watercolour painting by Felicity Flutter ensured that many of the visitors seemed reluctant to leave, although the draw of another studio was obviously high on their agenda despite the appalling weather.

Meeting the artists and an opportunity to ask questions and to commission that special piece is what makes Open Studios so important. The comments in the visitors’ book reflect on it’s success, Felicity was a little concerned to read “great work- Pig” in one entry, until she remembered that the prospective client wanted her to include pigs in her landscapes instead of sheep!

It was a timely coincidence that an introduction could be made between two visitors: A sculptor having moved to new premises had acquired a large kiln that he was unable to operate. He was excited to meet a ceramic artist keen to produce larger pieces of work and instruct him how to use it.
