This short video created by SEOS artist member Giles Whitehead, is a tribute to SEOS artist Paul Chave, who sadly passed away in February 2026.
Words – Giles Whitehead…
‘I first visited Paul’s studio during South East Open Studios on a sunny morning in June. Although I knew him mainly for his colourful fused glass birds, the visit revealed a much wider creative world. His studio was full of paintings, glasswork, ideas and conversation, and it was a privilege to spend time with him amongst the objects he had made.
The film combines photographs taken during that visit with memories shared by friend and fellow artist Nick Hebditch. Together they paint a picture of an artist whose curiosity, humour and creativity touched many people.
Like many visitors to Paul’s studio that day, I left with a small piece of his work – a glass Cyclops, which still watches over my daily routine and reminds me of that morning and the artist who created it.
This film is offered in gratitude for Paul’s life and work and as a celebration of the lasting impact that artists have on the communities around them.
Thank you to Nick Hebditch and Mark Welland from Artspring Gallery who provided memories and additional photographs and South East Open Studios for their support in the making of this video.’
