Biography
Having dabbled intermittently with pottery since I was a child, I returned to pursue my passion for clay around five years ago after my husband and I built our own live-work oak barn on Romney Marsh which has a large studio on the ground floor. In the last five years, I have become increasingly interested in glazing using ash from foraged and found materials such as straw, reeds, irises, wood, or whatever I can gather in large enough quantities – and preferably from local sources. I love the alchemy that happens when I mix a new successful ash glaze, although there can be quite a lot of kiln heartache a long the way! Having grown up on a farm in Devon, I feel deeply connected with land, soils and what grows from them. Here in my barn on Romney Marsh, surrounded by acres of stunning arable land, ditches, dykes and blackthorn hedges, I feel a particular connection with the earth which is probably why playing with clay has taken on such an important part of my life now. My glazes come from a fascination much further away, however. While studying Chinese as a student, my time in China gave me a great respect for their beautiful and ancient chun and nuka glaze ceramics, which is where my inspiration for ash glazes comes from. I’d be delighted to welcome you at Born In A Barn Ceramics during South East Open Studios!

Oak Barn Studio, Wills Lane, Newchurch, Romney Marsh, TN29 0DT (just past Berry Plants). It is best to come to the studio via the south of Wills Lane off Newchurch Lane, as the north end of Wills Lane (coming from Bilsington) is very narrow and the surface is very bumpy!)
