Biography
After training at Middlesex I worked in television as a Set Designer for twenty years, firstly at London Weekend Television and then as a freelancer on a diverse range of programmes and films. A change in direction took me into teaching and after doing a PGCE I went on to teach Art in a range of different settings.
Now, free to make work for myself, I enjoy a range of subject matter. Still Life, my garden, the coast, weather, changing seasons and the countryside. Over time my work is becoming less representational as I interpret these subjects into more abstract forms. Emotions and feelings guide my explorations.
I begin with simple sketches as a starting point, often pleinair, and go on to develop these into larger paintings in my studio. Using oil paint and cold wax on paper I build layers of colours and shapes, creating depth and movement, adding detail as the work progresses in an experimental way.
I hope that my paintings engage the viewer, perhaps touching on a memory or a feeling, often intangible but sometimes familiar at the same time.
I work mainly in oils from my garden studio in Tunbridge Wells.
