About Laurie Harpum
I live and work on the Isle of Sheppey, where the shifting coastline informs my assemblage practice. I collect objects washed ashore, unearthed from the cliffs, or discarded and altered by time — fragments carrying traces of human use, erosion and chance.
These found materials form the foundation of my work. Through assemblage, I bring together natural and manmade objects with constructed elements in clay, metal and wood, creating sculptural compositions that balance instinct, structure and narrative.
I am drawn to the surface language of materials: rust spreading across metal, worn timber, salt-stained textures and fractured edges shaped by exposure and movement. Each object arrives with its own history, and by placing disparate materials in dialogue, I explore ideas of memory, transformation, loss and renewal.
My work seeks to uncover poetry within overlooked things — revealing the tension between permanence and decay, and the quiet resonance held within objects shaped by time and tide.
