Biography

Litsa Aris creates unique hand built ceramic objects, working from her home studio in the heart of Kent.

With a background in film, photography, site specific installation & gardening, she underwent her clay epiphany just a few years ago whilst studying for an MFA at West Dean college.

Initially inspired by the renowned ceramicist AlisonSandeman at one of her infamous Raku sessions, Litsa fires her work using electric, raku, pit fire, saggar & obvaraprocesses.

Surface texture plays an important part in her work. Her mark making mostly derives from found textures – specifically imprints of tracery – ranging from wood beetle larvae tracks in a dead tree, through to crotchet lace doilies, all create opportunities for glazes and clay to play in the kiln. It is the alchemy that excites. For wild fire pieces the artist usually works with burnished surfaces enhanced with terra sigillata, thus allowing maximum scope for the flames to work their magic.

This year she is delighted to be showing her work alongside other local artists at the newly opened Exhibition Space, The Friars, Aylesford.

we are Studio 1 in the SEOS catalogue
