Biography
Margaret Devitt was born in South Africa and graduated from the University of Witwatersrand. She then ran a mohair weaving workshop in Lesotho for several years.
Upon moving to London she continued studying under Cecil Collins and attended life drawing classes at the Royal College of Art and The Prince’s Trust. She also studied printmaking techniques at the London College of Printing, and more recently has been studying under Robin Child.
She works mainly in oils and mixed media. Her subject matter includes figures, still life, landscape and abstract. She collaborates with Nigel Oxley with her printmaking. She has been learning oil and cold wax techniques at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland and through the Cold Wax Academy.She works in series and of the most recent she has said “In the Earth series I am using earth and neutral colours combined with various shapes and lines to evoke memories of places I have seen – deserts, deep down in caves, paintings and engravings on rocks, animal tracks, wind blown sand and geological strata.”
