Biography
Capturing atmosphere and evoking a unique mood defines the work of Philippa Futrell.
Pushing boundaries between realism and abstraction propels her, allowing pigments to give serendipitous discoveries as well as responding to the poetic narratives in the landscape around her. Using photography from walks as an aid memoir her intention is for a progression from what is felt, recorded and observed to a more personal reality. Recalling through the use of water based media the uneasy balance achieved between nature and the man-made environments of our country, it is the narrow, wild corridors across the United Kingdom which entrance her.
In her most recent work she has been drawn to the bright dancing light of waterways – the East Sussex coastline with their wind grieved groins under rocky cliffs, and the jewel-like tumbling waters of the Lake District.
Futrell studied at Middlesex, graduating in 1987 with a BA in Graphic Design. In 2024, after teaching art and Design to A Level, she relaunched her career as an artist exhibiting from her studio in Dixter Road, Northiam.
Recent shows include: Rye Arts Society, Star Brewery Gallery, Linden Hall Gallery, Sussex Contemporary, Cranbrook Art Show, EDE Project, Mall Galleries: Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours/214th Exhibition.
