Biography

Having had a formative art education in Glasgow, I see myself as a colourist. After gaining my BA in Graphic Design from Middlesex I worked for a well respected self-employed London designer for two years. However, a life changing trip to Bangladesh and a dislike for the prescriptive nature of a design career convinced me that becoming a teacher was a preferable way to maintain my love for exploration of media and gave me the platform to produce my own work. 1990 saw me employed to teach Art at Benenden School having completed my PGCE at London University and through many summer holidays I painted, slowly developing and selling privately. Becoming Head of Department in 2015 put a halt to my own creativity. I have subsequently retired from teaching to concentrate on being a professional artist. Painting in all forms of watercolour is my preferred media, pushing boundaries between realism and abstraction, focusing on quiet wild spaces throughout the UK – light, colour and texture informing compositions.
