Biography
Marie gave up teaching art in higher education in 2021 to focus on her art practice. She moved to the coast in 2024 and is now teaching art in the community and working in her art studio in Bexhill. Marie is a painter, a printmaker, a tutor, curious and experimental with materials and colour.
Marie’s work explores snapshots of experiences, the essences of a moment, an emotion. Life is not always as it seems, complexities of human relationships and the beauty found within life’s struggles. Universally relatable experiences that inspires compassion and understanding.
She uses drawing and photography to gather ‘moments’ in her life to build and inform the work.
She balances the use of the landscape, spaces, objects, and figuration as a metaphor for comfort and security, which can quickly move from security and anxiety to pleasure and pain.
Colour is a predominant element in her paintings, prints and drawings. The depiction of light and space is a vital aspect of the work.
Illusionary forms are created through thin layers of colour, pattern, and texture, rubbing back, revealing and re-working.
