Biography

Scarlett Woodman collects both her imagery and materials from her surrounding landscape, mostly that of the Kent countryside just outside her studio. She takes discarded objects, mostly old building materials, which she feels capture a sense of that landscape, then pieces them together to create her artworks.

She is drawn to the textures, colours and forms of the materials, particularly how these are created and enhanced by the ways in which they deteriorate over time. Using her unique process of scratching back into the surface of the material, Scarlett creates a softening effect, turning these harsh, heavy objects into something that appears almost delicate. By contrasting her celebratory images of nature with the deteriorated objects on which they sit, Scarlett reflects upon the strength, beauty and resilience of the natural world, as well as its fragility.
