West Dean Collage 17-19 July 2026 (residential) Observational Sketchbook Workshop: Connecting to Land

The workshop aims to inspire an observational sketchbook practice sharing innovative and intuitive ways to visually document resources.   Connecting to land, walking, gathering, observing is fundamental to immerse yourself in place, slowing down to notice.  Combining outdoor exploration with studio practice, the course encourages everyone to be playful, curious, exploring mark making and experimental drawing techniques using found objects.

Biography

Susie’s tactile paintings draw inspiration from the muted palettes of northern coastal landscapes, their geology, shifting light, the blurred horizontal lines as the sea merges with the vastness of the sky. Her practice combines stitch, painting, and printmaking, layering colour and texture to create the narrative of place.  Working with earth pigments bound in a biodegradable soya-milk medium she developed, her materials are rooted in the landscape itself.

Stitches map marks found on the land,  the mediative hand stitching becomes a metaphor for the repetitive rhythms of nature that forms texture and undulations like you find on the earth’s surface,  the constant rise and fall of the global ocean tide.   Solitary walking is central to her practice: experiencing the elements, gathering and recording observations. Her field trip sketchbooks are an invaluable resource, informing her studio work.

Susie is a textile artist and workshop teacher; her work is exhibited in international and UK textile shows,  selected Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal West Bristol (RWA) Opens, Sussex Contemporary Opens & Discerning Eye.  Awards include Royal Cambrian Selectors Prize & Fine Art Textile Award
